She doesn’t soften Cormac’s edges, and her delivery of Daisy’s lines (especially her matter-of-fact ‘You’re my family now’) is so authentic it hurts. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, though I wished for slightly more dynamic range in the quieter scenes—Cormac’s late-night phone calls to his sister could’ve used more intimacy in the mix. Where the book stumbles slightly is in its romantic subplot. The love interest, a local teacher, feels underdeveloped compared to Cormac’s relationship with Daisy, and their conflict resolves a touch too neatly. But the core of the story—the messy, non-linear process of Cormac learning to *need* people—is so well observed that it’s easy to forgive.
