About This Audiobook

Set against the brooding backdrop of a fractured medieval realm, *A Dove at Midnight* delivers a gothic-tinged historical romance where courtly intrigue bleeds into personal reckoning. Eleanor, cloistered since childhood under the guise of protection, is less a recluse than a carefully hidden piece on a chessboard of royal ambition. When her secluded life is upended by the arrival of a battle-scarred knight with shifting loyalties, the novel pivots from simmering political maneuvering to a slow, aching exploration of trust and self-liberation. This isn’t a story of sweeping battles, but of whispered threats, coded glances, and the quiet courage it takes to speak after years of enforced silence. Nicky Baker’s narration elevates the novel’s restrained tension with a vocal precision that mirrors Eleanor’s guarded interiority. Her performance is understated yet masterful—Eleanor’s voice remains soft, deliberate, often trembling at the edge of resolve, while the male characters are rendered with just enough grit to feel dangerous without tipping into caricature. The audiobook’s strength lies in its atmosphere: Baker uses subtle shifts in cadence and silence to amplify the claustrophobia of castle walls and the weight of unspoken desire. For listeners drawn to introspective heroines and layered power dynamics wrapped in period elegance, this audiobook casts a hypnotic, if occasionally deliberate, spell.

Editor's Review ★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *A Dove at Midnight* expecting another sweeping royal romance, but what I got was something quieter—and far more memorable. Nicky Baker’s narration is the soul of this audiobook. She doesn’t dramatize Eleanor so much as inhabit her, delivering lines with a fragility that gradually hardens into conviction. I particularly loved how Baker handled the pauses—those moments when Eleanor almost speaks, then retreats. They’re devastating. The chemistry between Eleanor and Sir Gareth builds slowly, almost imperceptibly, which works beautifully in audio format, where tone matters more than action. That said, the pacing does lag in the middle third, where political machinations repeat without enough forward momentum. I found myself rewinding a few times, not because I missed something, but because the tension plateaued. Also, while I appreciate subtlety, some secondary characters feel underdeveloped in voice and motivation—Lady Margred, in particular, needed more vocal distinction from Baker to stand out. Still, the final act delivers emotional payoff with restrained power. The way Eleanor finds her voice—literally and figuratively—gave me chills. This is an audiobook that rewards patience and deep listening.
