Derek Perkins’ narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, turning what could’ve been a dense academic tome into something approaching a fireside lecture with a brilliant, patient teacher. His voice carries the gravitas of a scholar but the warmth of someone who genuinely loves his subject, and he navigates the book’s sprawling cast of rabbis, mystics, and reformers with a clarity that’s nothing short of magical. The pacing is another standout—Perkins never rushes, but he never drags either, giving Goodman’s meticulous research room to breathe without letting the attention wander. That said, the audiobook’s length is its one real hurdle: 24 hours is a commitment, and even the most riveting historical insights can start to blur after the 15-hour mark. The biggest critique, though, is Goodman’s occasional tendency to linger on the minutiae of theological disputes (I counted three separate paragraphs on the dietary laws of late antiquity—engaging, but maybe overkill). Still, these are minor quibbles in a work that’s as essential as it is entertaining. By the final chapter, you’ll feel like you’ve walked through two thousand years of history with a guide who never talks down to you, but always assumes you’re ready for the next revelation.
