Their internal monologues about identity and performance are some of the sharpest I’ve heard in historical romance. Ian Slater’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. He nails the comedic timing—especially in scenes where Violet’s schemes spiral—but where he *really* shines is in the romantic beats. The slow-burn tension with love interest Arthur feels electric, partly because Slater underplays it; there’s no melodramatic swooning, just a quiet intensity that makes their chemistry feel earned. The pacing drags slightly in the middle during a subplot involving a secondary character’s scandal (it’s resolved too neatly), and Slater’s upper-crust accents occasionally blur together.
