Flynn doesn’t flinch from the uglier sides of family bonds, and that’s what hooked me. The moment Libby discovers her parents’ stall in London has been gutted by her own brother? I actually gasped. The audiobook’s strength lies in how it balances these explosive revelations with quieter, devastating details, like the way Libby’s mother’s letters are laced with guilt but never outright confession. Anne Dover’s narration elevates the material significantly. Her voice has this wonderful gravelly warmth that makes Libby feel like a real woman, not a plucky heroine. That said, I did find her male voices occasionally slipped into sameness—Libby’s brother and love interest sometimes blurred together in tone. The production is otherwise flawless, though the pacing in the first act drags slightly as Flynn sets up the Liverpool backdrop. Still, once Libby reaches London, the story becomes impossible to pause. The climax, where Libby confronts her mother in a rain-soaked alley, is one of the most electrically narrated scenes I’ve heard this year.
