A Simple Soul

I was struck by the way Paul Edwards' low-key narration allowed the quiet desperation of the protagonist to seep into my consciousness. Flaubert's prose is typically associated with grand, sweeping narratives, but here he pares things back to reveal the beauty in the mundane. The pacing is deliberate and measured, building to a conclusion that's both heartbreaking and strangely uplifting. If I have a quibble, it's that the production could benefit from a slightly warmer sound mix – at times, the audio feels a touch too dry. Additionally, some listeners may find the narrative's relentless focus on the protagonist's inner life a tad claustrophobic. Still, for those drawn to character-driven fiction, this is a compelling and deeply human listen.
