Against the Flow

I wasn’t prepared for how *Against the Flow* would worm its way into my head. Emily Gray’s narration is a standout—her voice isn’t just a vessel for the story; it’s the storm itself. At times, she sounds like she’s right there in the cabin with Caffari, her exhaustion palpable as she describes weeks without sleep, the creak of the boat, the salt stinging every exposed inch of skin. The pacing is masterful, too. Some sections drag with the tedium of repairs and dead calm, while others zip by in a blur of panic as another system fails. Gray’s ability to switch between these extremes without losing clarity is impressive, though I wished she’d leaned harder into the regional accents of the crew she occasionally interviews—some of those voices felt like they’d been dialed down to a whisper, as if the production team was afraid of breaking the immersion. The book’s biggest win, though, is its refusal to glorify the journey. Caffari doesn’t shy away from her mistakes or the sheer dumb luck that kept her alive, and that honesty makes the audiobook feel like a conversation with someone who’s been to hell and back. My only real critique? The transition between the solo leg and the subsequent races felt a bit rushed—like we were skimming over the training and political hurdles she overcame to even get to the start line. Even so, this is a gripping listen for anyone who wants to know what it’s actually like to stare down the planet’s most unforgiving forces and still refuse to quit.
