Ava Ross leans hard into the absurdity of her worldbuilding (a species that *literally* kidnaps women to survive? Sure, why not) and somehow makes it work by grounding the story in razor-sharp dialogue and a heroine who’s as quick with a blade as she is with a comeback. The first act is a masterclass in tension: the abduction scene is visceral, the alien’s hunger feels genuinely dangerous, and the heroine’s resistance isn’t just token—it’s *funny*. (Her internal monologue about ‘not dying to a horny space Viking’ had me cackling.) The narration is a standout. Stephen Dexter’s Xilan pirate sounds like if Jason Momoa voiced a starving wolf—all guttural threats and barely leashed desire. Felicity Munroe’s performance is the perfect foil, her sarcastic asides and exasperated sighs selling the heroine’s reluctance to succumb. My only gripe? The middle act drags slightly when the plot pivots to interstellar politics; the romance loses some of its bite as the stakes expand. And while the steamy scenes are *plentiful*, a few repeat phrases (‘slaking need’) start to feel like a drinking game by hour four. Still, the chemistry between the leads is electric, and the final act’s twist—where the heroine turns the tables on her captor—is worth the price of admission alone.
