About This Audiobook

May Cobb delivers a slow-burn thriller where Southern charm curdles into something far darker. Set in 1980s Longview, Texas, *All the Little Houses* follows Nellie Anderson, a woman unraveling the mysteries of her past—including her family’s eerie, half-finished houses that loom like unfinished business. Cobb’s prose is sharp and immersive, weaving a tale of toxic legacy, buried secrets, and the quiet devastation of small-town gossip. The tension isn’t just in what’s revealed, but in how Nellie’s own memories distort under the weight of family lies.

This isn’t your typical Southern gothic; it’s grittier, more intimate, with a focus on the claustrophobic dynamics of family and place. The narration elevates the story further. Malin Akerman’s Nellie is sultry and skeptical, grounding the surreal elements of the plot, while Allyson Ryan’s sharp, no-nonsense delivery cuts through the haze of memory. The ensemble cast—including Alexandra Hunter and James Fouhey—shifts seamlessly between roles, making every revelation feel personal. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors the story’s creeping dread, lingering just long enough to make you uneasy.

Editor's Review ★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I was skeptical going in—another Southern gothic? But Cobb’s voice is so distinct, so unflinching, that I was hooked from Nellie’s first drunken recollection. Akerman’s narration is a masterclass in controlled intensity; she makes Nellie’s vulnerability feel raw, her rage simmering just beneath the surface. That said, the pacing drags in the middle act, where the mystery’s threads don’t quite cohere. A few chapters in, I wanted more urgency—something to match the explosive potential hinted at in the setup. That said, the production is top-tier. The sound design subtly reinforces the story’s themes—echoing hallways for Nellie’s childhood home, distant thunder for looming dread—without ever feeling gimmicky. The real standout is Allyson Ryan, who narrates a secondary character with such dry wit it’s impossible not to laugh, even as the story darkens. The ending is divisive: it walks the line between satisfying and abrupt, but it lingers, which is more than I can say for most thrillers these days. If you like your stories with bite and a side of Southern Gothic unease, this delivers.
