Scott McCormick’s Torin, in particular, is a villain you can’t help but be fascinated by, his voice dripping with the kind of menace that makes you both terrified and thrilled when he’s near the protagonist. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act when the political maneuvering drags, making the romance feel momentarily sidelined by lore dumps. Still, the payoff is worth it.
