I’ll admit, I approached *An Impossible Return* skeptical of yet another ‘star-crossed lovers against the backdrop of war’ narrative. But within 30 minutes, Bennett’s narration—particularly his delivery of Élodie’s internal monologues—had me hooked. There’s a rawness to his performance that sells the character’s naivety and eventual disillusionment, especially in scenes where she confronts the violence of colonial rule. The production quality is crisp, though I docked half a star for a few awkward edits where the pacing stumbles during transitions between flashbacks and present-day scenes. The story’s real strength lies in its refusal to romanticize. Laurent doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of Élodie’s complicity, or the cost of her awakening. The middle act drags slightly with overly detailed political debates, but the payoff—a heartbreaking climax that subverts the usual ‘love conquers all’ trope—makes it worth the patience. Bennett’s voice work shines brightest in the quieter moments: a cracked whisper during a betrayal, the hollow tone of a letter read aloud years too late. It’s not a perfect audiobook (the secondary characters occasionally blur together), but it’s one of the few that made me *feel* the weight of history—not just observe it.
