As I settled in to listen to An Unfortunate End, I was immediately captivated by Claire Storey's captivating narration. Her portrayal of Lillie Mead, a resilient war widow with a sharp wit and a thirst for justice, brought the story to life. I found myself drawn into the gritty, post-war New York setting, eager to unravel the mystery surrounding the poisoned socialite's death. Zumpano's prose is sharp and evocative, with just the right amount of historical detail to transport me to another time and place. However, I did feel that some of the secondary characters could have been more fully developed to enhance the overall depth of the story. Nevertheless, An Unfortunate End is a compelling debut that I would recommend to fans of historical mysteries and strong female protagonists.
