I chose to listen to 'Ancient Rome' by Simon Baker not just for the content, but for the narrative experience, and Chris MacDonnell's delivery more than delivered. Baker's structure, focusing on six key junctures, is immediately engaging—it prevents the usual history book monotony by highlighting moments of genuine consequence. MacDonnell's narration is genuinely excellent. His vocal performance isn't just informative; it's dramatic. He imbues even the most complex political maneuvers with tension and the triumphs with appropriate grandeur. His pacing is generally masterful, though there are a couple of extended sections covering relative lulls in the main plot points where the speed could have been marginally tighter—perhaps a brief dip in energy after describing consecutive emperors' brief reigns. Overall, the performance is crisp, energetic, and deeply involving. MacDonnell skillfully guides the listener through Rome's meteoric rise and fall, making ancient history profoundly accessible. Minor quibble might be that while Baker clearly focuses on the high-level impacts, some listeners might crave slightly more granular detail on specific cities or cultural aspects beyond the core events, but the production quality is top-notch and the story arcs are compelling enough to keep you hooked for the 17 hours.
