About This Audiobook

Connie Shelton’s 'Balloons Can Be Murder' lifts off with more than just helium—it’s a tightly wound mystery set against the vivid backdrop of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, where the sky isn’t just a canvas of color but a looming crime scene. Rachael Fairfield, part-time balloon pilot and full-time investigator with RJP, stumbles into a case that’s equal parts personal and perilous when a prominent businessman plummets from a basket mid-flight. Shelton blends the grounded realism of small-firm detective work with the visual spectacle of mass ascensions, making the setting as dynamic as the plot. It’s women’s fiction with an investigative edge—Rachael isn’t chasing justice to prove herself, but because she genuinely sees what others overlook. Rebecca Cook’s narration elevates the tension with a crisp, no-nonsense delivery that mirrors Rachael’s pragmatic demeanor. Her voice carries a subtle Southwestern cadence—authentic but never overdone—and she gives each character distinct vocal fingerprints, from the gravelly humor of a veteran pilot to the clipped professionalism of local law enforcement. The audiobook’s strength lies in its pacing: Shelton trusts the listener to connect dots without dragging, and Cook’s timing makes every revelation land with impact. If you crave a mystery that’s atmospheric but not languid, and a protagonist who’s sharp without being superhuman, this one’s ready for takeoff.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I came for the balloons and stayed for Rachael Fairfield—a smart, grounded investigator who feels like someone you could grab coffee with before heading into a crime scene. The premise hooked me immediately: a ballooning accident that’s clearly not an accident, set during one of the most visually dazzling events in the U.S. Connie Shelton avoids cliché by rooting the mystery in real emotional stakes—Rachael’s connection to the victim adds depth without melodrama. The plotting is lean and logical, with twists that surprise but never cheat. Rebecca Cook’s narration is a standout. She doesn’t go for theatrical flair, which works in the story’s favor—her restraint keeps the focus on the evidence, the dialogue, the slow burn of discovery. That said, I did find a few exposition dumps in the middle stretch where Rachael recaps findings in a way that feels more functional than organic. Also, while the supporting characters are well-drawn, one or two secondary suspects vanish from the narrative only to reappear at the climax, which slightly undermines the otherwise tight construction. Still, the audiobook’s production quality is excellent—clean audio, consistent pacing, and Cook’s subtle shifts in tone make it easy to distinguish characters without gimmicks. Overall, it’s a satisfying listen for fans of character-driven mysteries with a strong sense of place.
