Katy Sobey’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; her voice is like a scalpel, dissecting each layer of the protagonist’s unraveling without ever resorting to histrionics. There were moments I had to pause the audiobook just to process how *unsettling* it was to hear a voice sound so perfectly balanced between normalcy and creeping dread. The book’s structure—part memoir, part thriller, all psychological horror—shouldn’t work, but it does, because de Vigan refuses to give the reader a single anchor. You’ll question what’s real, what’s imagined, and whether the narrator’s collapse was ever her own choice. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. The pacing drags in the middle third as the protagonist’s descent spirals into repetition, and some listeners might find the clinical detachment of the writing style alienating at first. Sobey’s performance can’t fully compensate for those sections, though she comes close. Still, the payoff is worth it. The final act, where the narrator’s voice fractures into something almost unrecognizable, is one of the most chilling things I’ve heard in an audiobook.
