Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I'll be honest – I wasn't blown away by the first few hours of Beans, Bourbon, & Blood. The pacing felt a bit plodding, and I found myself wondering if Jensen's travels would ever get moving. But then, just when I thought I was in for a slog, the story suddenly kicks into high gear and doesn't let up for a second. Snow's narration is a big part of what makes this work – he's got a great ear for atmosphere and a keen sense of timing that keeps the tension ratcheting up steadily. That being said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more character development in places. Jensen's supporting cast is a bit one-dimensional, and I found myself having trouble keeping track of who was who and what their stakes were. Still, the story itself is engrossing and the world-building is top-notch. If you're a fan of gritty, hard-boiled westerns with a dash of action and adventure, you won't want to miss this one. Just be prepared for a bit of a slow burn in the early going – it'll be worth it, though.
