Beyond Broken Pencils

I approached Beyond Broken Pencils with trepidation, given its heavy subject matter. But I was quickly drawn in by Gilbert's stark, matter-of-fact prose and Bonnem's narration, which lends an eerie, detached quality to the story. The pacing is relentless, each chapter a ticking clock counting down to the inevitable. I found myself both repelled and riveted by the protagonist's cold-blooded planning. However, the story's unyielding grimness can feel overwhelming at times, and I found myself longing for a moment of respite or complexity. Still, this is a powerful, unsettling listen that lingers long after the final, chilling words.
