Instead, he leans into the silence between words, the breath before a spell, the hesitation in a voice cracked with shame. It makes Portia’s internal spiral feel unnervingly real. The pacing starts deliberately, almost meditative, but steadily tightens like a noose as the consequences of her botched ritual unfold. That said, the middle section drags slightly—there’s an over-reliance on internal monologue that, while insightful, slows momentum. Also, some secondary characters feel underdeveloped, their motivations only hinted at. But these are minor flaws in an otherwise gripping listen. What sets this audiobook apart is its refusal to offer easy redemption. The magic here isn’t glamorous—it’s sacred, fragile, and unforgiving, and Beckley’s performance underscores that gravity with every quiet, weighted pause.
