I’ll admit, I went into *Bliss* expecting another run-of-the-mill queer romance, but Zedde’s writing caught me off guard. This isn’t a story about instant fireworks; it’s about the *kindling*—the way Bliss’s world, gray and muted, gradually ignites under Regina’s influence. The early chapters might test some listeners’ patience (Bliss’s passivity borders on frustrating at times), but that’s the point: her stagnation makes her awakening all the more electric. Zedde excels at sensory detail—Regina doesn’t just cook; she *seduces with food*, and Johnson’s narration makes you *taste* the mangoes, *feel* the stickiness of syrup on skin. It’s a masterclass in how to write (and perform) desire without relying on cliché. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. Johnson’s delivery is mostly stellar, but her cadence occasionally stumbles in dialogue-heavy scenes, making some exchanges feel slightly stiff. And while the slow burn works, the middle act drags just a touch—Zedde spends so much time in Bliss’s head that the external conflict (what little there is) feels underdeveloped. But these are quibbles. The real triumph here is how *embodied* the story feels. By the final act, when Bliss finally claims her own pleasure, it’s not just satisfying—it’s *earned*. If you love romances that double as love letters to Black queer sensuality, or if you’ve ever fantasized about a partner who doesn’t just want you but *wakes you up*, this audiobook is worth every minute of its near-10-hour runtime.
