Jameson’s pick of 17 raids, vendettas, and heists refuses to romanticize the outlaws—these aren’t dashing rogues, but desperate men (and the occasional woman) backed into corners by greed, pride, or sheer survival. My favorite? “The Taylor-Sutton Feud,” where a land dispute curdles into a decade-long blood feud that spills across the Nueces Strip. The pacing here is brisk but never rushed; even the drier historical context (like cattle drives or border disputes) is woven in as character backstory. What dragged it down slightly was the occasional repetition of “lawmen” or “bandidos” in close quarters—Moreno’s narration helps, but after a while, the terminology starts to feel boilerplate. Still, by the final tale, I was invested enough to forgive it. If you want a taste of America’s untamed guts without the saccharine sheen of Hollywood westerns, this audiobook delivers.
