I’ll be honest: I wasn’t prepared for how *alive* *Bubblegum Sun* would feel. From the first chapter, Anderson’s narration drags you into the sweat-soaked streets of 1967, her voice shifting from the lazy cadence of a teenager melting in the heat to the tight, controlled fury of a generation realizing the world’s promises are lies. There’s a scene midway through—where the protagonist and her friend steal a bottle of wine and end up debating W.E.B. Du Bois on a fire escape—that had me rewinding twice. Anderson nails the balance: the slurred, giggly drunkenness never undermines the weight of their words, and that’s the book’s genius. These kids are *smart*, even when they’re reckless. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its stumbles. The transitions between past and present tense in Walker’s writing occasionally feel jarring in audio form, and Anderson’s choice to voice one minor character with an exaggerated lisp pulled me out of the moment (a rare misstep in an otherwise flawless performance). The production’s minimalist approach mostly works—no distracting sound effects, just the raw power of the prose—but I wished for a touch more atmospheric texture in the outdoor scenes, where the oppressive heat is such a character itself. Still, these are quibbles. By the final chapter, as the summer’s tension snaps, I found myself sitting in my car long after arriving home, unwilling to break the spell. This isn’t just a coming-of-age story; it’s a reminder that some voices refuse to be silenced, even fifty years later.
