As a non-Catholic listener, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 2-hour audiobook on bridging divides within the Church. But James Martin’s *Building a Bridge* disarmed me immediately with his gentle, unpretentious delivery. His voice has the soothing quality of a therapist who’s also a scholar—patient, but never passive—and that balance makes the audiobook feel like a rare hybrid of intellect and empathy. Martin grounds his arguments in Scripture and Church tradition, but he avoids the stale dogmatism that often plagues theological podcasts. Instead, he leans into real-life encounters, like his conversations with LGBTQ+ Catholics, which give the material weight beyond abstract doctrine. My only critiques? The audiobook’s brevity sometimes feels rushed, leaving some arguments underdeveloped—particularly on how to address those who reject his approach outright. And while Martin’s tone is warm, the lack of dynamic variation in his narration occasionally dulls the emotional punch of his message. Still, for anyone frustrated by the Church’s culture wars but unwilling to abandon their faith, this is a rare audiobook that feels like both a balm and a challenge.
