Busted

I dove into Busted expecting a solid, entertaining kids' story, and it delivered exactly what I needed: something funny, something heartfelt, and something undeniably memorable. Owen Henderson, the narrator and main character, is a fantastic protagonist – relatable, flawed, and hilariously awkward in all the right ways. The story walks a tightrope between handling the sensitive topic of divorce and keeping the tone light, and it mostly succeeds thanks to Gemeinhart's sharp writing and Mark Sanderlin’s fantastic narration. Sanderlin brings a warm, slightly folksy Southern drawl that perfectly suits Owen's voice and injects so much charm into every line read. He handles the multiple characters and shifting tones with effortless skill, making the audiobook experience even richer. I laughed aloud many times, especially at Owen's spectacularly dumb mistakes and the absurd way he navigates new friendships. The pacing is generally excellent, keeping the story moving forward with plenty of zany plot twists. My only minor critique is that while the story remains engaging throughout its 8 hours, Owen's consistent knack for getting into trouble, while funny, can feel a bit repetitive for some listeners. Overall, Busted is a truly excellent listen for anyone looking for a moving, funny, and well-crafted story about growing up.
