About This Audiobook

If you’ve ever wished for a romance where the heroine’s curiosity is as dangerous as the alien warrior tasked with protecting her, *Capturing Cara* delivers—with claws. S.E. Smith’s signature blend of snarky humor and high-stakes paranormal romance gets a fresh jolt here, as Cara Truman, a human woman with a knack for stumbling into intergalactic trouble, becomes the unwilling focus of a hulking, honor-bound shifter from another world. The chemistry isn’t just instant; it’s combustible, fueled by Cara’s refusal to play damsel and her protector’s exasperated fascination with her ‘tiny human’ audacity.

David Brenin’s narration is the secret weapon: his gravelly baritone slides effortlessly between dry wit (perfect for Cara’s sarcasm) and primal intensity (ideal for the hero’s barely leashed possessiveness). The audiobook thrives on contrast—lighthearted banter one moment, heart-pounding action the next—making it a standout for listeners who crave romance with teeth. What sets this apart from the pack? The worldbuilding sneaks up on you, embedding alien politics and shifter lore in sharp, digestible bursts rather than info-dumps, keeping the focus squarely on the push-pull dynamic that’ll have you grinning (or groaning) at Cara’s latest reckless move.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘tiny human vs. giant alien’ trope initially—until Cara Truman opened her mouth. Within five minutes, Brenin’s performance sold me on her as a protagonist: equal parts scrappy and self-aware, her sarcasm delivered with a rasp that makes it feel like she’s standing right next to you, daring you to call her on her nonsense. The real surprise? How well Brenin balances the humor with the story’s darker edges. His growling portrayal of the hero, Trelon, walks the line between menacing and smitten, and the way he voices Trelon’s exasperated *‘Cara…’*—like he’s two seconds from throwing her over his shoulder—had me laughing out loud. The pacing is where *Capturing Cara* stumbles slightly. The middle act drags with repetitive ‘will they/won’t they’ tension, and a subplot involving a secondary character feels shoehorned in for sequel setup. That said, the final act’s payoff—complete with a deliciously over-the-top rescue and a slow-burn confession—more than makes up for it. The production quality is flawless, with crisp audio and seamless transitions between action scenes and quieter moments. If you love romances where the heroine’s stubbornness is the match that lights the hero’s fuse (and vice versa), this is a no-brainer. Just be warned: you’ll either adore Cara’s chaos or want to shake her. I oscillated between both—and loved every minute.
