AudioBook Atlas
I’ll admit, I side-eyed the 17-hour runtime at first, but Judith West’s performance had me hooked by Chapter 3. She doesn’t just *read* Delia Byrd—she *is* her, with a voice that’s equal parts gravel and honey. The way she handles the musical scenes (Delia’s a washed-up rocker) is particularly brilliant; you can hear the ghost of a rasp in her tone when she sings, like she’s channeling a lifetime of smoky bars and bad decisions. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its stumbles. Allison’s tendency to linger on minor characters (I’m looking at you, Randall’s sermonizing uncle) tests patience in audio form, where every tangential rant feels like a detour. And while West’s Southern accents are mostly pitch-perfect, her child voices for Delia’s younger daughter occasionally veer into *precocious*-movie-kid territory, pulling me out of the story.
But the magic of *Cavedweller* lies in its contradictions. It’s a book about return that never feels nostalgic, a family saga that’s more interested in scars than hugs. The cave-diving sequences—narrated with a claustrophobic intensity—are some of the best audiobook moments I’ve heard this year. When Delia descends into the dark, West’s voice slows, the words pressing in like water, and you *feel* the weight of the earth above. It’s not a perfect listen (the ending, while satisfying, wraps up a tad neatly for a story this jagged), but it’s a *necessary* one. If you’ve ever loved someone you’ve hurt, or hurt someone you love, this audiobook will sit in your chest like a stone—or a key.
