Furr’s narration sells the dread; his voice cracks just enough when describing the plant workers’ final, futile attempts to keep the cooling pumps running on diesel generators that were never meant to last this long. The audiobook’s production subtly reinforces the tension: subtle background hums, distant emergency chatter, the occasional metallic clank that makes you flinch. That said, the book stumbles when it tries to shoehorn in broader geopolitical context. Plokhy occasionally pivots to lectures about NATO or energy markets that feel like audiobook filler between the real, heartbeat-fast terror. And while Furr is stellar at conveying dread, his softer moments—like the quiet guilt of a local mayor who knew the evacuation orders would strand the elderly—sometimes get swallowed by the audio mix.
