I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first pressed play on *Classic Literature by Jim Hodges Productions*. Full-cast radio dramas feel like a relic from another era, and I worried the heavy-handed performances might feel dated or overwrought. But within the first ten minutes of *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer*, I was hooked. The narrator’s Southern drawl crackles with authenticity, and Tom’s mischief is downright infectious—so much so that I found myself grinning at my steering wheel during rush hour. The ensemble’s chemistry is the real star; the banter between Tom and Huck feels like eavesdropping on long-lost friends, and the villainous Injun Joe slithers into the story with a voice so sinister it’s almost campy (in the best way). My only gripe? The production occasionally leans *too* hard into theatricality, especially in quieter moments where subtlety might have served better. And while the sound design elevates the experience, I occasionally found myself straining to hear dialogue over the background noise—a minor frustration in an otherwise stellar performance. That said, if you’ve ever wanted to fall in love with literature again, this audiobook’s got the magic to do it. It’s cheeky, dramatic, and unapologetically old-school, but in the best possible way.
