Joana Garcia’s narration elevates what could’ve been a dry pedagogy tome into something propulsive. Her voice crackles with conviction when Aguilar dismantles deficit-based thinking, and she softens just enough during reflective exercises to let the listener breathe. The pacing is relentless where it needs to be—like during a chapter on interrupting microaggressions—and slows thoughtfully during the more introspective sections, giving you space to sit with discomfort. My only gripe? Garcia occasionally mispronounces words like “equitable” (hint: it’s not “equa-ty-able”), which jolted me out of otherwise seamless delivery. What stood out most were the real stories Aguilar weaves in—like the coach who realized her “support” was actually enabling a teacher’s racism, or the administrator who finally understood why tracking was harming students. The book shines brightest when Aguilar stops theorizing and starts sharing her scars. If you’re looking for another guilt-trip lecture on equity, this isn’t it. If you want a battle plan to rebuild systems from the ground up, buckle up.
