Controlled Freak: Part 1

I’ll be honest: *Controlled Freak* isn’t an easy listen, but it’s a *compelling* one. From the first chapter, Yost throws Jamie into a meat grinder of betrayal and abuse, and rather than sugarcoat her response, he lets her rage burn the story to the ground. What makes this stand out isn’t just the relentless pacing (though at 7 hours, it never drags) but the way it refuses to romanticize Jamie’s transformation. She’s not a hero—she’s a girl who’s been pushed past breaking, and Duran’s performance sells every jagged edge of that descent. Her delivery is *electric*, especially in the fight scenes, where her voice becomes a weapon itself, all snarls and desperate gasps. I found myself rewinding just to hear how she phrased certain lines—like when Jamie whispers, *“I’m not scared of you anymore”* like it’s a death sentence. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. The worldbuilding sometimes feels thin; we’re dropped into Jamie’s nightmare with little context about the larger forces at play, which can make the supernatural elements feel abrupt. And while the lack of a traditional “good guy” is refreshing, there are moments where Jamie’s actions veer into gratuitous territory—less cathartic, more exhausting. Still, the production quality is top-notch: the audio levels are crisp, and the rare use of ambient noise (a distant police siren, the *thud* of a body hitting the ground) adds immersion without overpowering Duran’s performance. If you love antiheroes with bite and narrators who *commit*, this is a standout. Just don’t expect to walk away feeling clean.
