Crime Pays

Seth Tanner’s voice is the reason to listen to this audiobook. His delivery is so effortlessly jaded, so convincingly exhausted by the weight of human cruelty, that it feels like he’s narrating from the inside of a motel room where the walls are sweating with secrets. The short stories themselves are a masterclass in tension, though some—like the one about the arsonist who can’t stop burning his own life down—land harder than others. A few endings feel abrupt, as if the author got impatient, but that’s nitpicking. The real payoff is in the narration’s texture: Tanner’s timing on pauses is surgical, letting the horror sit in the silence like a bad smell. If you’re tired of crime stories that romanticize the killer, this collection will slap you awake with its raw, unflinching gaze into the abyss. Just don’t expect any redemption arcs—Crime Pays doesn’t do happy endings.
