Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire

I’ll admit, I side-eyed the ‘vampire Marine’ premise at first—how many times can we revisit the ‘brooding soldier with fangs’ trope? But *Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire* won me over by leaning *hard* into its own ridiculous charm. Russell’s post-coma adjustment to vampirism is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking (his first attempt to feed is a disaster of epic proportions), and Sparks’ worldbuilding feels lived-in, from the politics of the shifter courts to the vampire council’s bureaucratic nonsense. The romance simmers nicely, though I’ll dock half a point for the ‘forbidden love’ angle feeling a tad over-familiar by Act III—Lucy’s internal conflict about duty vs. desire could’ve used more nuance. Where this audiobook *shines* is in Enrique Morales’ performance. His Russell is a standout: the voice is rough-edged but not cartoonishly growly, and he nails the character’s dry humor (a scene where Russell deadpans about vampire ‘HR policies’ had me cackling). The production quality is flawless—no awkward edits or volume spikes—but I did notice Morales’ female voices occasionally blur together, especially in group scenes. Still, his chemistry with Lucy’s dialogue is electric, and the action sequences are *visceral*. At nine hours, the pacing drags slightly in the middle during worldbuilding dumps, but the final act’s showdown is worth the wait. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance with teeth (literally) and a narrator who can sell both snark and smolder, this is a satisfying closer to the series.
