Adenrele Ojo and Zachary Webber make this audiobook sing like a well-oiled jukebox, their voices snapping between Amber’s weary pragmatism and the chaotic charm of the townspeople with effortless chemistry. Ojo nails Amber’s internal monologue—equal parts guarded and irreverent—while Webber’s delivery of the love-interest-turned-friend-turned-something-else keeps the romantic tension taut without veering into melodrama. My only gripe? The supporting cast sometimes steals scenes whole, leaving Amber’s emotional arc feeling a bit overshadowed by the eccentric bystanders. That said, Lee’s writing shines brightest in the quiet moments—the way she describes the weight of a familiar hug or the guilt of realizing you’re exactly where you swore you’d never be. The pacing drags ever so slightly in the second act when the plot hinges on a series of obvious confrontations, but the payoff is worth it.
