I went into *Dark Fates* expecting another angsty paranormal romance with a cookie-cutter prophecy and a brooding love interest, but DeRosa flipped the script in ways I didn’t see coming. The romance isn’t just about attraction—it’s about power, sacrifice, and the terrifying gamble of trusting someone who’s literally from a world that’s taught you to see them as the enemy. Kaige’s struggle between duty and desire feels achingly real, and Solaris’s defiance isn’t just for show; she’s a force of chaos, and her chemistry with Kaige is as combustible as the prophecy’s countdown. That said, the plot’s reliance on “chosen one” tropes occasionally trips on its own scaffolding, and the worldbuilding leaves just enough unexplained to feel like a missed opportunity. The pacing, however, is relentless—even the slower moments crackle with tension, and the final act delivers a gut-punch resolution that lingers. The narration deserves its own standing ovation. Cendese’s Kaige is all icy precision with a simmering undercurrent of vulnerability, especially in scenes where his discipline frays. Cook’s Solaris is a whirlwind of sass and vulnerability, her tone shifting from playful to desperate in a heartbeat. My only critique is that some of the secondary characters’ accents felt inconsistent, distracting from moments that needed emotional clarity. Still, the dual narration works brilliantly, making the audiobook feel like a live performance rather than a recording. If you crave romance that’s equal parts danger and devotion, *Dark Fates* will leave you breathless—and possibly questioning every rule you’ve ever lived by.
