The pacing is another highlight—Lawrence slows just enough to let the emotional beats land, whether Tula is facing down a literal demon or Eluheed is decoding a 6,000-year-old riddle. The only misstep? The sci-fi elements occasionally feel tacked on, as if Lucas couldn’t decide if she was writing *Outlander* meets *The X-Files* or a gothic thriller. The transition from ancient curses to futuristic tech sometimes jars, like swapping a violin for a theremin mid-concerto. Production-wise, the audiobook is near-flawless.
