Dark Joy

I went into *Dark Joy* expecting another steamy paranormal romance, but Feehan delivered a story that punches far above its weight. The world feels lived-in, dangerous, and yes, *dark*—in the best way. The hero, a Carpathian warrior with centuries of blood on his hands, is a compelling mess of contradictions: ruthless yet tender, ancient yet achingly human in his vulnerability. The heroine, a reluctant shifter with a chip on her shoulder the size of Montana, is a fantastic foil—her defiance makes their inevitable bond feel earned, not contrived. The plot moves at a breakneck pace, but it never sacrifices emotional depth. My only gripe? The secondary characters occasionally blur together, and a few side plots fizzle out without resolution. Still, the payoff is worth it. Ryan West is a revelation here. His narration is so immersive that I forgot I was listening to an audiobook—whether he’s voicing a growling alpha male or a snarky shifter, his range is jaw-dropping. The production quality is top-tier, with no distracting background noise or compression issues. That said, I did find myself rewinding a few times during the more intense action sequences; West’s speed can make dialogue hard to catch when things get chaotic. But these are minor quibbles in a performance that otherwise feels tailor-made for this story. If you love your romances with a side of grit and a hero who doesn’t know the meaning of ‘subtle,’ *Dark Joy* is a must-listen.
