When I hit play on Darkstalker, I wasn’t prepared for how quickly Shannon McManus made the ancient world feel intimate. Her narration is a masterclass in subtlety; she lets the dragons’ ancient wisdom linger in her tone, while the human characters get a youthful, earnest edge. The opening scene, where a fledgling dragon discovers a forbidden cavern, is rendered with such breathy suspense that I could practically smell the sulfury air. McManus’s pacing shines in the battle sequences—she quickens her delivery just enough to raise tension, then pulls back for reflective moments that let the story’s deeper themes breathe. The production values are solid, but not flawless. A few background sound effects—specifically the clatter of armor in chapter eight—are a touch louder than necessary, momentarily pulling me out of the narrative flow. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise polished experience. Sutherland’s plot weaves political intrigue with mythic prophecy, offering a fresh perspective on the dragon universe that longtime fans will appreciate. If you love richly imagined fantasy that explores origins rather than conclusions, Darkstalker’s blend of epic scope and personal stakes makes it a must‑listen.
