I was hooked from the first move. Helm's narration is a powerhouse, bringing Beth's character to life with such nuance that you'll feel every high and low right alongside her. The pacing is excellent, building tension like a well-played chess game. Tevis doesn't shy away from the gritty realities of Beth's life, and Helm doesn't sugarcoat them either. The only critique I have is that some secondary characters could have been more fleshed out, but that's a minor quibble in an otherwise outstanding audiobook. This is more than just a chess story; it's a testament to the power of resilience and the beauty of strategy.
