I’ll admit, I side-eyed the 9.5-hour runtime at first—until I realized I’d need every minute to savor the slow, delicious unraveling of this enemies-to-lovers dynamic. The narration is *exceptional*, but not in the polished, uniform way you’d expect from a big-budget production. Shane East’s performance as the immortal warlord is all controlled menace, his voice rough enough to suggest centuries of warfare, yet he lets vulnerability crack through in the quietest moments. Avery Caris, as the mortal diplomat, counters him with a performance that’s all precision and steel—until it isn’t. Their chemistry is electric, but the real surprise is how the secondary cast (Campbell and Froomkin) elevate the court scenes. Campbell’s smarmy noble had me hissing at my headphones, which is exactly what you want from a villain. That said, the pacing *does* lag in the middle. Rocha’s worldbuilding is rich, but there’s a stretch where political intrigue overshadows the romance, and even stellar narration can’t fully mask the drag. And while the aquatic sound design is immersive, a few transitions between scenes feel abrupt—like the audio equivalent of a hard cut in a film. But when the story hits its stride (and oh, does it hit), it’s *glorious*. The sex scenes are scorching without being gratuitous, the power dynamics are deliciously uneven, and the ending—well, let’s just say it earns every bit of the emotional whiplash. If you love your romance with sharp teeth and a side of existential dread, this is your next obsession.
