His delivery for Max is earnest and determined, perfectly capturing the voice of a kid who refuses to give up, even when the odds are stacked against him. McRae doesn’t over-act the minor characters, which keeps the focus squarely on Max’s mission, but he does inject just enough gravitas into the demons’ descriptions to make their presence felt. The pacing is snappy, almost breathless at times, which mirrors the urgency of Max’s quest. It’s a risky approach—rushing could lose listeners—but here, it works because Varley’s writing is so tight. That said, the narration isn’t without flaws. McRae’s voice for the demons occasionally veers into cartoonish territory, which undercuts their menace. A few lines about their appearances or behaviors felt tonally jarring in an otherwise serious sequence. Additionally, the production has a slightly hollow echo in some scenes, as if the recording space was too large or untreated. These hiccups are minor, though, and don’t detract from the overall experience.
