By the midpoint, I found myself leaning in, waiting for the next accusation to land, because Cortez makes the psychological unraveling feel like a slow-motion car crash you can’t look away from. That said, the novel’s final act is where it stumbles for some listeners. The infamous ‘last chapter’—a single sentence that refuses resolution—will frustrate anyone craving closure. I admired the boldness of it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel cheated on a second listen. Still, the audiobook’s strengths outweigh its flaws. The runtime (just over six hours) is perfect for a story this dense, and Cortez’s performance elevates it from a classic to an experience.
