I’ll admit: I approached this audiobook skeptical of yet another ‘quiet Japanese love story.’ But *El cielo es azul* disarmed me within minutes—partly because of Kawakami’s razor-sharp observations (Tsukiko’s habit of ‘accidentally’ bumping into Sensei is both hilarious and heartbreaking), and partly because Estela Fernández *gets it*. Her narration walks a tightrope between irony and tenderness, especially in scenes where Tsukiko’s internal monologue clashes with her outward nonchalance. The production choices amplify this: the audio is so clean it feels like a whisper in a snow globe, which suits the wintery, insular mood. That said, the pacing won’t suit everyone. Kawakami lingers on mundane details—a shared plate of octopus, the way Sensei’s hands tremble—and while these moments *should* feel profound, there were stretches where I wished for more narrative momentum. The age gap between the protagonists also goes largely unexamined, which might frustrate some listeners. But these are quibbles. What sticks with me is how the audiobook captures the *texture* of longing: the way Fernández’s voice cracks slightly when Tsukiko lies to herself, or how the final scene’s silence (yes, actual silence in the recording) lands like a punch. If you’ve ever loved someone you shouldn’t—or loved someone *badly*—this one will gut you.
