I’ll admit: I approached this audiobook as someone who’s read *Emma* half a dozen times, skeptical that a celebrity cast could add much to Austen’s already-perfect prose. Then Emma Thompson opened her mouth. Her narration is a masterclass in tonal control—her Emma is charmingly oblivious one moment, devastatingly self-aware the next, all while threading the needle between comedy and pathos. The real revelation, though, is the ensemble. Joanne Froggatt’s Harriet Smith is heartbreakingly earnest, her voice trembling with the weight of Emma’s misguided influence, while Joseph Millson’s Mr. Knightley smolders with quiet authority. Even minor characters pop: Aisling Loftus’s Jane Fairfax is a study in restrained tension, her polite veneer barely concealing steel. That said, the production isn’t flawless. The shifts between narrators can occasionally feel jarring—especially in rapid-fire dialogue scenes where the editing cuts a beat too sharply. And while Morgana Robinson’s Mrs. Elton is a *delightful* caricature (her trilling voice is pure, cringe-inducing gold), it sometimes tips into pantomime, undercutting Austen’s more nuanced satire. Still, these are quibbles. The real triumph is how the audiobook makes you *hear* what’s often missed in silent reading: the awkward pauses in Emma’s conversations with Mr. Elton, the way Harriet’s voice lifts when she’s (mistakenly) flattered, the unspoken judgment in Mrs. Weston’s gentle corrections. At 8 hours, it’s a sprint through Highbury’s social minefield—and by the end, you’ll wish you could stay longer.
