The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as it forces you to sit with Esther’s isolation and fear. The narration duo of Rachel Botchan and Kevin R. Free is a masterstroke: Botchan’s Esther is fragile yet steely, her voice softening during private moments but sharpening when she’s navigating the treacherous royal court. Free’s portrayal of Mordecai is equally compelling—gruff, protective, and steeped in quiet sorrow. My only critique is that Hunt occasionally lingers on exposition about Persian customs, which slows momentum in the first act. But the payoff is worth it. The final confrontation with Haman crackles with intensity, and the audiobook’s production is flawless, with no distracting background noise or overdone dramatization. This isn’t your grandmother’s Esther story; it’s a story for anyone who’s ever felt powerless in a world that wants to erase them.
