This isn’t a story about a woman melting for a man’s potential; it’s about two professionals who *hate* needing each other but can’t afford to walk away. Osburn’s dialogue is so sharp it should come with a warning label, especially in the early scenes where Naomi and Chance circle each other like rivals in a boardroom brawl. The audiobook excels in these moments thanks to Tanya Eby, whose timing is impeccable. She lands Naomi’s sarcasm with a knife’s edge (“*Bless your heart*” has never sounded so threatening) and gives Chance’s lines a gravelly weight that makes his rare moments of honesty hit like a punch to the gut. That said, the middle act drags slightly during the label’s subplot—Osburn’s industry satire is fun, but the corporate maneuvering occasionally steals focus from the central duo. And while Eby’s male voices are strong, her secondary characters (like Chance’s bandmates) sometimes blur together in tone. But these are quibbles. The real magic is in how the audiobook *feels*: like eavesdropping on a backstage argument at the Ryman, all heated whispers and half-finished confessions. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, letting Eby’s performance carry the emotional weight—especially in the final act, where a single, shattered *“I can’t do this”* from Naomi made me hit pause and catch my breath. If you’re tired of romances where the conflict is manufactured, this is the antidote: messy, real, and so specific to Nashville it *smells* like leather boots and stale whiskey.
