About This Audiobook

*Father of Lies* isn’t just another psychological thriller—it’s a razor-sharp dissection of doubt, wrapped in the suffocating atmosphere of a devout Mormon community. Brian Evenson, a master of literary horror, drops us into the mind of Eldon Fochs, a lay provost whose nightmares suggest he might be a monster. The genius here isn’t in the *if* but the *how*: Is Eldon a repressed criminal, a victim of false memory, or something far worse? The novel thrives in the gray, where faith and paranoia blur, and every revelation feels like a trapdoor opening beneath you.

Mauro Hantman’s narration is a standout—his voice carries the weight of a man teetering between piety and panic, his delivery measured yet laced with creeping dread. The audiobook’s brevity (just over four hours) works in its favor, tightening the screws without overstaying its welcome. This isn’t a story that explodes; it *unfolds*, like a noose being pulled taut. For listeners who crave horror that lingers in the mind long after the last chapter, or who love unreliable narrators with a theological edge, this is a must. But be warned: the questions it raises don’t have easy answers.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I went into *Father of Lies* expecting a straightforward thriller about a man grappling with hidden sins. What I got was far more unsettling—a story that weaponizes ambiguity, where the real horror isn’t what Eldon *did* but what he (and we) might *believe*. Evenson’s prose is clinical yet hypnotic, and Hantman’s narration mirrors that precision. His Eldon isn’t a raving lunatic but a man reciting his own damnation with eerie calm, which makes the moments of fracture—when his voice cracks or speeds up—all the more chilling. The production is clean, with no distracting quirks, letting the psychological tension take center stage. That said, this isn’t a book for everyone. The pacing is deliberate, almost glacial in the middle stretch, as Eldon’s therapy sessions and church interrogations circle the same themes. Some listeners might crave more overt scares or a clearer resolution, but the payoff lies in the ambiguity. (The final scene, in particular, is a gut-punch of moral ambiguity that I’m still turning over.) My only real critique is that the secondary characters—Eldon’s wife, his therapist—sometimes feel underdeveloped, serving more as mirrors for his crisis than fully fleshed-out people. But that might be the point: in Eldon’s world, everyone is either a judge or a ghost. If you love horror that’s more *The Witch* than *The Exorcist*—quiet, creeping, and hauntingly open-ended—this is your next listen.
