Kael’s complicity in her imprisonment isn’t hand-waved, and Elowen’s rage isn’t performative. Their interactions crackle with the kind of tension that makes you grip your headphones tighter, waiting for the explosion (or the kiss—honestly, both feel equally dangerous here). Van Der Westhuysen’s performance is *masterclass* level. She nails the exhaustion in Elowen’s voice when she’s recalling her imprisonment, the way her tone drops to a growl when she’s pushing back against Kael. Even the secondary characters—like the smug, silver-tongued courtier—get distinct vocal textures, so you’re never lost in the worldbuilding. My only critique? The mid-book pacing drags slightly during the political intrigue sections; the dragon-bonding scenes are electric, but the council-room debates occasionally feel like a detour.
