First Comes Love

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘billionaire secret baby’ premise—until about 30 minutes in, when Melanie Mendez’s Lena snapped, *“Oh, you’re *that* kind of rich,”* and I realized this wasn’t going to be another fantasy of wealth porn. *First Comes Love* works because it’s *angry*—in the best way. Lena isn’t some wide-eyed ingénue; she’s a woman who’s been burned by Xavier’s type before, and Mendez nails her mix of exhaustion and razor-blade comebacks. Andrew Grace, meanwhile, takes what could’ve been a cardboard alpha and turns Xavier into a man who’s *terrified* of caring about anyone, his voice tightening into something almost brittle when he’s cornered. Their chemistry in the narration is electric, especially in the early scenes where they’re practically snarling at each other over custody arrangements. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. French spends a *lot* of time in Xavier’s boardroom drama, and while Grace sells the corporate tension, there are stretches where the romance takes a backseat to spreadsheets and power plays. (I fast-forwarded through at least two meetings about mergers—I’m here for the *emotional* mergers, Nicole.) The production is otherwise flawless—crisp audio, seamless transitions between narrators—but I wished the editor had trimmed some of the repetitive internal monologues about Xavier’s daddy issues. Still, the payoff is worth it: the last third delivers a grovel so satisfying, I actually rewound to hear Grace’s voice crack during Xavier’s apology. If you love enemies-to-lovers with real teeth and narrators who *get* the subtext, this is your next listen—just be prepared to side-eye a few corporate detours along the way.
