About This Audiobook

Olivia Manning’s *Fortunes of War* isn’t just another wartime epic—it’s a razor-sharp character study wrapped in geopolitical chaos. At its heart is Harriet Pringle, a young wife whose idealism about love and marriage shatters against the brutality of Europe’s descent into war. Her journey from Bucharest to Greece is less about battlefield heroics and more about survival: not just of bombs and borders, but of pride, jealousy, and the crushing weight of self-deception. Manning’s prose is dry but electric, and this full-cast audiobook seizes that tension, turning dialogue into a live wire.

The narration elevates the material into something cinematic. Joanna Lumley’s brittle, upper-class Harriet is a revelation—her voice drips with the kind of wit that curdles into bitterness. Honeysuckle Weeks lends her own acidic charm to the role, while Khalid Abdalla’s performance as the enigmatic Prince Yakimov crackles with dark humor. The ensemble doesn’t just read lines; they *perform* the slow unraveling of idealism, making you feel every misstep Harriet takes. If you’ve ever loved a story that’s more *E.M. Forster* than *Hemingway*, this is your audiobook.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Fortunes of War* expecting a dusty historical saga, but Manning and her all-star cast delivered something far sharper: a messy, human-scale tragedy that just happens to take place against the backdrop of WWII. Lumley’s Harriet is a protagonist you’ll both adore and want to throttle—her blindness to her husband’s flaws is so painfully relatable it hurts. The audiobook’s strength lies in its pacing: the first half moves like a thriller (will they leave Bucharest in time?), while the second lingers on the emotional fallout, giving you space to dwell on the characters’ terrible decisions. Abdalla’s Yakimov is the standout—his every line oozes charm that’s one part seduction, two parts warning. That said, the full-cast production occasionally trips over itself. Some transitions between narrators feel abrupt, and a few supporting roles lack the same depth as the leads. The audiobook clocks in under six hours, which is both a blessing (no filler) and a curse (some subplots feel rushed). Still, I’d take this dynamic, voice-driven performance over a more straightforward narration any day. If you crave historical fiction that prioritizes emotional truth over historical spectacle, this is the audiobook for you.
