Four Mark Twain Stories

I’ll admit, I approached this expecting the usual dusty reverence for a ‘classic’—but Bill DeWees’ performance blew that assumption out of the water. His delivery in *The Notorious Jumping Frog* is *perfect*: he nails the slow, drawling setup of the tall tale, then snaps into the manic energy of the frog race with such precision that I actually laughed aloud on my commute. That’s rare for me with audiobooks. The production quality is crisp, with no distracting edits, though I did notice one odd pause mid-sentence in *The Story of the Good Little Boy* that briefly pulled me out of the rhythm. The real surprise, though, was how fresh Twain’s social critiques still feel. *The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg* could’ve been written yesterday—its skewering of hypocrisy and mob mentality is *that* sharp. My only critique? I wished for one more story. At 74 minutes, it’s over before you want it to be, and the absence of *The War Prayer* (a personal favorite) stings a little. Still, as an introduction to Twain’s shorter work—or a palate cleanser between heavier listens—this is flawlessly executed. DeWees doesn’t just read Twain; he *channels* him, warts and all.
