I was blown away by the complexity and nuance of A Conspiracy of Mothers, and Kineta Kunutu's narration was a significant factor in my engagement with the story. Her performance is both empathetic and detached at the same time, perfectly capturing the guarded nature of the mothers as they navigate their secrets and relationships. One of the most striking aspects of the story is the way Van Niekerk explores the intersection of motherhood and identity, particularly in the context of South African history. However, at times the pacing felt a bit uneven, with some plot threads feeling slightly underdeveloped. Additionally, the supporting characters could have benefited from a bit more depth to make them feel fully fleshed out. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise outstanding audiobook.
